A farewell from exiting CEO Roi Pilpel

13.03.18

Dear friends,

Over the past six and a half years, I was very fortunate to hold the position of CEO for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Israel (BBBS).

I replaced Libby Reichman, the organization's founder, who exposed me to the world of mentoring, and immediately upon starting my job I understood the important value of providing a Big Sister or Brother. I felt that everyone could use a Big Brother or Sister – someone to consult with, to lean on in times of need.

I discovered that when you get excited about something, it is possible to inspire others to join the circle of doing.

And this is how I set out on my journey.

Our activities at BBBS are based on the understanding that "all that a child needs is one adult who believes in him or her" (a quote from Rabbi Carlebach). In line with this thinking, we tried to reach as many children as possible and to provide them with the experience of having a Big Brother or Sister – "someone to run with". In 2011, the organization had three branches. In a short time, we began to partner with local authorities, we went on to spearhead the historical merger with the BBBS Haifa branch, and today, BBBS has sixteen branches nationwide.

BBBS has a most wonderful circle of giving: The children receive volunteer Big Brothers or Sisters; the volunteers receive training and supervision from our professional staff; our staff is supervised by BBBS management; the CEO and the Executive Board serve as mentors to the staff and lead organizational policy making, and their energy and motivation is derived from seeing the children whose lives change for the better – this is how the circle becomes complete.

During my years at BBBS, I worked with the staff, the Executive Board, many partners, committed volunteers, families and of course the children. I learned and became wiser from all of them, and I tried to contribute to the best of my abilities to the realization of the BBBS vision and to implement the plans of the Executive Board, while ensuring the professional quality and high standards of our organization.

Although it is not my place to judge, I must say that when I look at the organization's development, the challenges that we had to deal with, and the achievements that we have made over the last six and half years, I feel a tremendous sense of satisfaction and pride.

I was fortunate to work alongside a superb professional staff that operates from a place of dedication and commitment to the children and volunteers, from a strong sense of responsibility, caring and professionalism - a staff that does not cut corners, checking each and every volunteer from a deep understanding of the incredible responsibility that they carry on their shoulders. Today, after hundreds of meetings in various forums throughout Israel and overseas, I am sure that we have the most high quality and professional staff in the field of mentoring and I am proud to be part of the Big Brother Big Sister family.

Now the time has come to move on to new challenges. I will be leaving my position at BBBS and beginning a new job as CEO of MICHA Tel Aviv. I would like to thank the Executive Board for their friendship, belief, support and faith in me to lead the organization in the new directions that we have gone in over the last several years. A special thanks to the professional staff for a wonderful period of friendship, cooperation and impressive achievements.

I would also like to take this opportunity to wish Tomer Tiberia, the new CEO, best of luck in his new job. Over the last several years, Tomer managed the "Gesher El Hanoar" organization that works with youth at-risk and brings with him fifteen years of experience in the fields of education and welfare. I am confident that Tomer will continue to move the organization forward and will know how to best connect with the staff and the volunteers to deal with future challenges (you can contact Tomer directly at tomer@bigbrothers.org.il).

Since we all work in the business of doing good things, I am sure that our paths will cross in the future.

Good luck to everyone, thank you and farewell.

Roi
