I remember the phone call I received from Big Brothers Big Sisters. "I've found her!" the director told me. I had originally contacted the organization after seeing their ad in a newspaper. It took a while for the match to be made, but the connection was instantaneous. I met Yarden, 12, in her home together with her mother. There was an immediate click—it was clear we had both been thirsting for this kind of a relationship and we somehow knew that it was the beginning of a special friendship.
The first time we got together, we went to a musical, and we both had a great time, and not just because it was a wonderful show. Yarden loves music and she was overwhelmed by the experience of seeing a musical for the first time. And I was grateful because I finally had the right reason to enjoy the children's entertainment that I like so much.
We've gotten together weekly over the course of years. We explore special places in Jerusalem, enjoy arts and crafts projects, have ice cream and watch movies together. I look forward to our times together no less than Yarden. It's an extraordinary opportunity to detach from everyday worries and simply live in the moment of discovery.
